Walk 700m south from Centraal along the Damrak (the wide commercial street that follows the original river mouth — "dam at the Amstel"). Pass the Beurs van Berlage (1903 commodity exchange, now a concert/exhibition hall — the building that shaped 20th-century Dutch architecture). Dam Square anchors the city: the Royal Palace (1648, originally the City Hall, now royal) and the National Monument (1956, dedicated to WWII victims) frame the view. This is the urban orientation point — from here the nine concentric canals radiate west and south.

Practical Tips

Avoid all currency exchange stalls on Damrak — commission rates 8–12%. Use ATMs (Multibank network) for euros if needed.
Avoid Madame Tussauds (corner of the square) and Body Worlds (further south on Damrak): expensive, very crowded, nothing Dutch.
Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis): €12, open Tue–Sun 10:00–17:00. Genuinely impressive interior — 17th-century marble city maps, atlas sculptures, royal apartments. Worth 45 min if time allows. Skip if rushing to Anne Frank House.
Coffee: W Café (Damrak, VERIFY) for a quick espresso before heading west. Better: walk one block off Damrak to any side-street café for €1.80 espresso vs €4.50 on the tourist strip.
Begijnhof (Gedempte Begijnensloot, 5 min south of Dam): a 14th-century almshouse courtyard hidden behind an unmarked wooden door. Free, open ~09:00–18:00. The most peaceful spot in central Amsterdam and almost universally missed by day-trippers.
