Route Waypoints
The Brandenburg Gate (1791, Carl Gotthard Langhans) was the Cold War symbol of division — it stood in East Berlin, unreachable from the West, until 1989. Now it's freely walkable and photographable from both sides. Walk 5 minutes north: the Reichstag, whose glass dome by Norman Foster opens at 08:00 and stays lit until midnight (FREE, register at visite.bundestag.de). Walk 5 minutes south: the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (Holocaust Memorial) — 2,711 concrete stelae of varying heights that you walk through. The underground Information Centre (free) contextualises the Holocaust with individual biographies. Three world-class sights within 800 metres; allow 90 minutes here before moving east.
Practical Tips
Reichstag dome: book at visite.bundestag.de months ahead in summer. Book a 08:00 or 08:15 slot to be done before tour groups arrive at 09:30. Time slots every 15 minutes, 08:00–21:45 (last entry). Bring the ID registered — they check it.
2026 dome closure dates: 15–19 June, 29 June–3 July, 14–18 September, 28 September–2 October, 19–30 October (for maintenance). Check bundestag.de/en for any updates.
Holocaust Memorial Information Centre: closed Mondays. Enter the steel stelae themselves any time of day or night — they are always open, always free.
Rooftop terrace (below the dome): also free, spectacular views, slightly less crowded than the dome itself. Käfer Dachgarten restaurant is here — €€€, worth a drink for the view.
The Gate itself: walk through the central passage (once reserved for royalty) and stand in the former no-man's land. Face east on the Unter den Linden side — that's the direction of the former DDR.
