3 hours

Tram 1 or 10-minute walk from the train station to the Old Town (Staré Mesto). Bratislava's Old Town is the most compact in Central Europe — the entire walled medieval quarter fits within a 600m radius and takes 20 minutes to walk end-to-end. Hlavné námestie (Main Square): the Old Town Hall (14th century), the Maximilian Fountain (1572, the oldest Bratislava fountain), and café terraces where locals outnumber tourists after 18:00. St. Martin's Cathedral (Dom svätého Martina, 14th century): the coronation church of Hungarian kings — 11 Habsburg monarchs including Maria Theresa were crowned here (Bratislava was the capital of the Hungarian Kingdom from 1536–1783 when the Turks occupied Budapest). The small golden crown on the church steeple commemorates this. Michael's Gate (Michalská brána, 14th century): the only surviving medieval city gate, 51m tower, Museum of Arms inside.

Practical Tips

Michael's Gate (Michalská brána, Michalská 22): €4.50, 51m tower, the best view over the Old Town from within the Old Town. Open Tue–Fri 10:00–17:00, Sat–Sun 11:00–18:00 (VERIFY at bratislava.sk for 2026 hours).
St. Martin's Cathedral: €3 adult. The interior is relatively plain (stripped during Baroque renovations) but the coronation crown replicas and the Habsburg heraldry are interesting. Open daily during non-service hours.
Cumil statue: GPS 48.1433, 17.1118 — Laurinská/Panská street junction. The most-photographed item in Bratislava. The manhole has a sign asking people not to sit on his head.
Hviezdoslavovo námestie (30 metres south of the Old Town): a long rectangular park boulevard — in summer the outdoor café scene here is the city's social centre. The Slovak National Theatre (Slovenské národné divadlo) faces the square. Opera tickets from €15 (VERIFY at snd.sk).
Aperitivo culture does not exist in Slovakia — the local evening ritual is sitting at a restaurant table from 19:00 and eating properly, with wine or beer. Adjust expectations accordingly.
