The Old Town walls (Gradske zidine) were built between the 8th and 17th centuries — 1,940m perimeter, up to 25m high and 6m thick, with 3 circular and 12 square towers. The 1.5–2h circuit gives continuous views: the Adriatic on the seaward side, the terracotta Old Town on the interior. The counter-clockwise route starts immediately left inside the Pile Gate: up to Minčeta tower (the highest point, 37m, inland view toward Mount Srđ), west across the sea-facing Bokar section, south along the Adriatic cliffs above the swimming rocks, and east past St. John fortress to Revelin and back to the start.
Practical Tips
Walls ticket: buy online at dubrovnik-walls.hr (no extra booking fee) to avoid the cash queue at the gate. Print or phone QR. The ticket is valid only on the day of purchase.
Opening time: typically 08:00 in spring and autumn, 07:00 in peak summer (VERIFY at dubrovnik-walls.hr — hours vary by season). Arrive 15 min before opening.
Counter-clockwise is correct: turning left inside Pile Gate. The alternative (clockwise) starts with the less scenic interior sections. Counter-clockwise puts the best Adriatic views in the middle and end of the walk.
Minčeta tower (GPS [2])42.643718.1072: the circular north tower, highest point, 360° view. Brief descent to road level required — follow the signs, the path is signed.
Fort Lovrijenac (GPS [3])42.642218.1044: the detached sea fortress on the rock west of Pile Gate — accessed from outside the walls via a 5-minute walk. Included in the combo ticket. Game of Thrones Blackwater Bay scenes were filmed here. The inscription above the gate: "Non Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro" — "Freedom cannot be bought for all the gold in the world." The Ragusan Republic's motto.
Best photography: the south-east corner near St. John Fortress looks back across the Adriatic toward Lokrum Island — the quintessential Dubrovnik photograph.
