5-minute walk south from Centraal along Hertogstraat. Eindhoven's Markt (main square) was rebuilt after heavy WWII bombing in 1944 — the old medieval centre is almost entirely gone, replaced by post-war functionalism that's now itself architecturally interesting. The Catharinakerk (1867, neo-Gothic, still active parish church) survived the bombing and stands as the city's oldest remaining landmark. Stratumseind begins at the south end of the Markt — Europe's longest bar street (225m, 30+ venues), quiet before noon, transformed after 22:00. Coffee and appeltaart at any Markt café for €5 before starting the day.
Practical Tips
The Markt has free bike parking at multiple points — useful if you rented an OV-fiets.
Catharinakerk: open during services and for visitors most mornings. The neo-Gothic interior is cool and peaceful — 10-minute stop.
Stratumseind daytime: walk the length (225m, 3 min) to see the architecture and the densest concentration of bar signage in the Netherlands. The infamous sensory management system (fragrances pumped in via the ventilation system to reduce aggression on party nights) is invisible — you won't smell it in the morning.
Eindhoven City Walk (red route marked on pavement): the city's self-guided art-in-public-space tour passes through the Markt. Pick up the map at the Centraal station information desk.
Koffiezetapparaat (Stratumseind 1A): a good independent café if you want to start with specialty coffee rather than a standard Markt terrace.
