Bled Castle
Free PreviewBled Castle perches on a sheer 130-metre cliff above Lake Bled, making it one of the most dramatically positioned fortifications in Central Europe. Rated 4.4/5 across more than 34,000 reviews, it functions today as a castle museum and cultural monument — an ideal opener for the loop that contextualises the Alpine history you'll encounter throughout the week. Plan around 90 minutes here: the clifftop views over the lake and the Karavanke range to the north give you immediate orientation for the territory ahead. The castle is open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM, so an early arrival lets you beat the crowds and claim the terrace for yourself before heading to Vintgar. From here, the gorge is less than 5 km away.
Practical Tips
Open daily 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM; arrive early to avoid peak foot traffic
Car park is located below the castle hill — walk up from there
Allow 90 minutes for a thorough visit

Soteska Vintgar
Free PreviewSoteska Vintgar is a 1.6 km gorge carved by the Radovna River, reached just 4.8 km north of Bled. Wooden walkways and bridges lead through narrow canyon walls, past rapids and pools of startling clarity — a walk that delivers serious alpine drama for relatively modest effort. Rated 4.5/5, it's one of the most visited natural sites in Slovenia, so timing matters. Open daily from 8 AM (9 AM Thursdays), with last entry at 5 PM. The gorge is out-and-back, so allow 90 minutes comfortably. After Vintgar the route makes its biggest directional shift, heading 40 km west along the Sava valley toward Kranjska Gora and the foot of Vršič Pass — the first major drive of the trip.
Practical Tips
Open Mon–Wed, Fri–Sun from 8:00 AM; Thursday from 9:00 AM; closes 5:00 PM
Car park at the entrance near Podhom — arrive before 9 AM in busy periods
The path is mostly flat but involves uneven wooden walkways; not suitable for campervans beyond the car park

Russian Chapel
Free PreviewThe Russian Chapel — officially a small Orthodox church — sits beside the Vršič road at around 1,100 metres and serves as the emotional and historical gateway to the pass. It was built in 1916 by Russian prisoners of war who were constructing this very road under Austro-Hungarian command; many died in an avalanche here that same year. Rated 4.6/5, it is open 24 hours and the stop is brief — around 30 minutes — but the weight of the place is considerable. The wooden chapel is intimate and well-preserved, set against the mountainside in a forest clearing. It marks the point where the drive transitions from valley roads to the switchback ascent of Vršič itself.
Practical Tips
Open 24 hours; accessible at any time of day
Small roadside pull-off for parking — limited space for larger motorhomes
A quiet, respectful atmosphere is appropriate; this is an active place of worship and remembrance

Vršič Pass
Free PreviewVršič Pass, at 1,611 metres, is the highest mountain pass in Slovenia and the roof of this entire route. The road over the top — famously built by Russian POWs — uses 50 numbered hairpin bends on the ascent from Kranjska Gora and a further series on the descent into the Trenta valley. Rated an exceptional 4.8/5, the pass rewards campervans with panoramic views of the Triglav massif and the Soča headwaters valley below. Allow an hour at the summit to take it in. Drive the hairpins with patience — bends are tight and surfaces can be uneven. The descent begins immediately and leads you down toward the upper Soča valley and the source of the river itself.
Practical Tips
Pull-offs at the summit for photos and breaks — space is limited, especially for long motorhomes
50 hairpin bends in total; slow, controlled descent is essential
Check road status before departure — the pass can be closed or restricted seasonally
No facilities at the summit itself; fill water and fuel before ascending

Izvir Soče
Free PreviewIzvir Soče — the source of the Soča River — lies deep in the Trenta valley at around 880 metres, accessible via a marked trail from a roadside car park. Rated 4.8/5 despite relatively few reviews, this is one of those places that earns its rating quietly: a cold, vivid blue-green spring emerging from a cave in the limestone, the very beginning of the river that defines the whole valley south of here. Allow 60 minutes for the walk in and back. The site is open 24 hours and free to access. After visiting, you continue downstream through the Trenta valley toward the Triglav National Park Information Center — the next stop just 5.5 km further along the Soča.
Practical Tips
Accessible 24 hours; no entry fee
Roadside parking area near the trailhead — moderate walk to the spring itself; wear sturdy shoes
The trail involves some uneven rocky terrain
Water at the spring is very cold; the surrounding area is within Triglav National Park — leave no trace
