Route Waypoints
Belém is where Vasco da Gama sailed for India in 1497 and returned in 1499 with the sea route that upended the world economy. The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (1502–1572, UNESCO) was built to celebrate his voyage — the Manueline cloister is a two-storey white limestone explosion of maritime decoration: ropes, coral, armillary spheres, exotic animals. The church houses Vasco da Gama's tomb. Outside, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries, 1960) and the Torre de Belém (1519, built on a river islet now connected to shore) are a 15-minute riverside walk. Then: the queue at Pastéis de Belém (Rua de Belém 84, open since 1837).
Practical Tips
Take Tram 15E from Praça do Comércio: included in 24h pass (€6.80) or €1.80 single. Runs every 12–15 min. Takes ~25 min. More comfortable and reliable than Tram 28. Get off at Mosteiro dos Jerónimos stop.
Jerónimos: buy tickets online at visitarportugal.gov.pt or at the Bookshop Infante (to the right of the monastery entrance). Closed Mondays and June 13. Open Tue–Sun 09:30–17:30 (Oct–Apr) or 09:30–18:30 (May–Sep). The church interior is free — only the cloister and upper choir require a ticket.
Torre de Belém (VERIFY): the tower has undergone intermittent renovation — confirm open status at torrebelem.gov.pt before visiting. Adult ~€6 (VERIFY 2026). Closed Mondays. The interior (5 floors) is narrower than it looks — one-way flow, one staircase.
No official Jerónimos + Tower combo ticket (the old "Descobertas" combo was discontinued). Buy separately or use Lisboa Card.
Pastéis de Belém takeaway window (street side): queue is typically 5–10 min. They box them in paper — eat immediately or within 15 min while still warm and crisp.
