Take Tram 15E from Praça do Comércio (25 min, included in Carris 24h pass or €1.80 single) to Belém — the riverside district where Vasco da Gama sailed for India in 1497. The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (1502–1572, UNESCO) is Portugal's greatest Manueline building: the south portal is encrusted with ropes, coral, and saints in a way that makes Gothic carving seem restrained. The two-storey cloister is the masterpiece. Cross the road for the Padrão dos Descobrimentos and a 15-minute walk west to the Torre de Belém on the Tagus shore. Then: Pastéis de Belém (Rua de Belém 84) — the original 1837 custard tart, still made from the original secret recipe.

Practical Tips

Tram 15E from Praça do Comércio (or Cais do Sodré): every 12–15 min, included in day pass. Get off at Mosteiro dos Jerónimos stop. More reliable and comfortable than Tram 28.
Jerónimos: buy online at visitarportugal.gov.pt (no booking fee). Closed Mondays, January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1, June 13, December 25. Open 09:30–17:30 Oct–Apr or 09:30–18:30 May–Sep. The church nave is free.
No Jerónimos + Tower combo ticket exists in 2026 — buy separately. Consider Lisboa Card if visiting multiple sites.
Pastéis de Belém takeaway window (street-facing): 5–10 min queue. Eat immediately warm. The recipe has been unchanged since 1837 and is legally protected.
Torre de Belém VERIFY current open status at torrebelem.gov.pt — partial renovation works reported in late 2025. Interior is 5 floors on one narrow staircase.
