Route Waypoints
The Bodø ferry docks at Moskenes (67.9258, 13.0123) — the southernmost point of the Lofoten road network. Drive E10 northeast 8km to Reine (67.9329, 13.0903). Reine is the most photographed village in Norway: red rorbu cabins on wooden stilts over the water, vertical granite peaks rising immediately behind, the calm fjord reflecting everything. Hamnøy (67.9399, 13.1030, 2km further east): a smaller cluster of red rorbuer on a rocky islet connected to the main island by a low bridge — the Hamnøy bridge is the specific photograph that appears on every Lofoten travel feature worldwide.
Practical Tips
Hamnøy bridge photograph: park at the small layby (GPS [2])67.939913.1021, walk 5 min to mid-bridge. The view from mid-bridge east: rorbu cabins, mountain wall, water reflection. Best in calm conditions (no wind = mirror surface), early morning (before 09:00 for soft light and no other cars on the bridge).
Reinebringen hike (GPS trailhead: 67.9318, 13.0877): 1,448 stone steps built by Nepalese Sherpa craftsmen in 2019, climbing to 448m above Reine. Allow 1.5–2h up, 1h down. The panorama from the top encompasses the entire Moskenesøya island, the Vestfjorden, and the ocean beyond. Do not attempt in rain or strong wind — the steps are exposed.
Midnight sun from Hamnøy bridge: if arriving on the evening ferry from Bodø (arrives ~22:00 in summer), the light at midnight is extraordinary — golden, horizontal, and completely unhurried. Drive to the Hamnøy bridge immediately after ferry docking.
Sakrisøy island ((GPS [3])67.942513.1263, 1km east of Hamnøy): yellow rorbuer, a smaller and slightly less visited village on its own tiny island. The combination of red rorbuer at Hamnøy and yellow at Sakrisøy in one photograph is increasingly popular.
