Pick up the rental car at PMI and drive 15 min east to Palma's Old Town. Park in the underground garage below the Parc de la Mar (€1.50/hour) and walk to La Seu — the Cathedral of Palma. Built on the site of the main mosque after James I's 1229 Christian reconquest, La Seu is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world, with the widest Gothic nave in existence (19.9m span). Gaudí spent 10 years redesigning the interior (1904–1914): his most visible contribution is the canopy over the main altar — an abstract asymmetrical wrought-iron baldachin suspended above the altar, later continued by Miquel Barceló in 2007 (the remarkable ceramic-relief side chapel). The Royal Palace Almudaina next door was the Moorish royal palace before the Christian kings took it.
Practical Tips
Cathedral: open Mon–Sat 10:00–18:15 (summer until 18:15), closed Sundays to visitors during services. Enter from the south portal (Puerta del Mirador facing the sea). Audio guide included in €10. Allow 1h minimum.
Arab Baths (Banys Àrabs, Carrer Can Serra 7, (GPS [2])39.56862.6520): the only complete Islamic civic structure surviving in Mallorca — 11th century, a private hammam in a courtyard behind an unmarked door. €3.50 adult. Open daily 09:00–19:00. Often missed by visitors who don't know it exists.
Old Town tapas walk: the Llotja area (near the old stock exchange building, by the waterfront) has the highest concentration of genuinely good tapas bars — Ca n'Eduardo (Moll de la Llonja, seafood), Can Joan de S'Aigo (Carrer Can Sanç 10, chocolate with ensaimada, since 1700).
Sant Pere neighbourhood (north of the Cathedral): the most photogenic Old Town streets — Carrer de Zanglada, Plaça del Pes de la Farina. Less frequented than the tourist centre.
Evening: the Es Baluard modern art museum (Plaça Porta de Santa Catalina 10) has a rooftop terrace with the best Palma bay panorama at sunset. Free terrace access.
