Prague Astronomical Clock
Free PreviewThe Prague Astronomical Clock — Orloj — mounted on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall is one of the oldest functioning astronomical clocks in the world and the logical opening act of any Old Town exploration. The clock face tracks solar and lunar cycles, zodiac positions, and time in multiple historic systems simultaneously; reading it is its own small puzzle. On the hour, a procession of apostle figures emerges from the windows above the dial — brief, theatrical, and genuinely memorable rather than merely touristy. Plan 45 minutes here: time one of the hourly shows, then step inside the Old Town Hall tower if it's open for a rooftop view over the square. The clock is visible from the square at all hours but the interior and tower access run Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The next waypoint — Old Town Square itself — is just 200 metres away.
Practical Tips
Opening hours: Mon–Sun 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM.
Arrive a few minutes before the hour to secure a clear sightline for the apostle procession.
The square in front gets very congested mid-morning; earlier in the day gives a calmer experience.

Old Town Square
Free PreviewOld Town Square is the baroque and Gothic heart of Prague — an open stage ringed by coloured merchant houses, the twin Gothic spires of the Týn Church, and the Jan Hus Memorial at its centre. It's the kind of space that rewards slowing down: the architecture is layered across centuries and easy to miss if you're moving quickly. Budget a full hour to walk its perimeter, study the façades at different angles, and absorb the human theatre that fills it throughout the day. The square functions as a hub connecting virtually every Old Town attraction and serves as the natural gathering point at the start of this route. The Astronomical Clock (waypoint 1) is directly adjacent, so the two work as a natural pair. From here, the Jewish Quarter is a short 400-metre walk north.
Practical Tips
The square is publicly accessible at all hours with no entry fee.
Street performers and vendors concentrate here — keep belongings secure in crowds.
The Týn Church façade is best viewed from the eastern edge of the square.
Mid-afternoon tends to be the busiest period; early morning offers quieter photography conditions.

Prague Jewish Quarter
Free PreviewThe Prague Jewish Quarter — Josefov — occupies a compact area just north of Old Town Square and contains one of the most significant concentrations of Jewish heritage in Central Europe. The district includes multiple historic synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery, administered by the Jewish Museum in Prague. A combined ticket covers the main sites; plan 90 minutes as a minimum to do justice to the cemetery and at least two or three of the synagogues. The atmosphere is meditative and the historical weight considerable — this is not a rushed stop. Note that it's also a functioning religious site, so dress respectfully. After Josefov, the next stop is Pivovarský klub Benedict in Karlín, a 2 km walk east — a tram is a sensible option if legs are already tired.
Practical Tips
Check current opening hours and ticket options at jewishmuseum.cz before visiting — pre-booking is strongly recommended.
Dress modestly; shoulders and knees covered is appropriate.
Photography restrictions apply inside some synagogues — follow posted guidance.
Allow buffer time: the Old Jewish Cemetery in particular rewards unhurried exploration.
