Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
Free PreviewMetro B to Colosseo station — you exit directly in front of the Colosseum, which is confrontational in its scale (2,000 years old, 188m × 156m, 57m tall, the largest amphitheatre ever built). The strategic order: enter via the Palatine Hill entrance (less crowded, accessed from Via Sacra southeast of the Colosseum) and walk downhill through the Roman Forum to the Colosseum entrance — this means walking through Roman history chronologically (the oldest republic-era temples of the Forum first, then the Imperial-era Flavian amphitheatre last). The Roman Forum is the most complex archaeological site in the world — the accumulated layers of 1,200 years of Roman government, religious life, and trade.
Practical Tips
Enter via Palatine Hill, not the Colosseum main entrance: the Palatine access point is 300m southeast on Via Sacra (GPS [2])41.887512.4924. Shorter queues, and you descend through the Forum toward the Colosseum — the correct historical sequence.
Arena floor access: normally you see the Colosseum from the upper seating levels. The arena floor (where gladiators fought) and the underground (hypogeum, where animals and machinery were kept) require a €5–15 add-on, booked separately at coopculture.it. Worth it for the ground-level perspective.
Hypogeum (underground): the best Colosseum upgrade — you walk the tunnels where wild animals were hoisted by pulleys to the arena floor. Dramatically more immersive than the standard visit.
Forum interpretation: key elements — the Temple of Vesta (sacred fire never extinguished for 1,000 years), the Arch of Titus (showing the Jerusalem menorah looted in 70 AD, the first known image of it), the Rostra (the speaker's platform where Caesar's body was burned). The audio guide (€8) is worthwhile.
Closing time: in summer (April–September), last entry is approximately 19:00, closing 19:30. In winter, last entry ~16:00. Check coopculture.it for exact seasonal times. Start by 12:00 to allow adequate time.
