Walking to the End of the World

The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is both the spiritual terminus of the Camino de Santiago and the formal starting point of the Camino Finisterre. Standing on the Praza do Obradoiro — one of the great squares in European pilgrimage history — the cathedral's Baroque façade frames every departure and arrival. Ponte Maceira is a beautifully preserved medieval bridge crossing the Río Tambre, and one of the most photographed points on the entire Camino Finisterre. It arrives about 16 kilometres into your first day, at a moment when the city has fully fallen away and the rural Galician landscape has taken hold. The bridge's stone arches are elegant and low above the water, and the surrounding scene — mill buildings, the river, the trees — makes this a natural place to pause, eat something, and take stock. It marks the psychological midpoint of Day 1: you are genuinely out of Santiago now, moving through countryside that has barely changed in centuries. Allow 30 minutes to walk the bridge, rest by the river, and absorb the setting before continuing the final 4.9 km to Negreira.

Negreira is the overnight stop at the end of Day 1, and the Public Pilgrims Hostel on Calle Patrocinio is the practical anchor of that night. After roughly 21 kilometres of walking from Santiago, the hostel offers a bunk bed, a hot shower, and the company of fellow pilgrims heading the same direction. This is a municipal-style albergue — functional and purpose-built for the Camino — so expectations should be set accordingly: shared dormitories, communal bathrooms, early lights-out rhythms.
