Route Waypoints
Luzern Bahnhof opens directly onto Lake Lucerne and the Reuss river. The Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge, 1333) is Europe's oldest surviving covered wooden bridge — 204m long, crossing the Reuss river diagonally. It was partially burned in 1993 (arson, accidental), destroying 78 of the original 110 painted panels inside the bridge structure. The restored bridge is largely reconstruction. Walk across both directions. The Wasserturm (Water Tower, 13th century, not connected to the bridge — it's separate, attached to it) is the most photographed element. Löwendenkmal (Lion Monument, 1821, Bertel Thorvaldsen): a 9-metre carved lion dying in a rock face, commissioned to commemorate Swiss Guards killed in the French Revolution. Mark Twain: "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world." 15-minute uphill walk from the Altstadt.
Practical Tips
Best photograph of Kapellbrücke: from the modern Seebrücke (road bridge) just east — you see the full diagonal bridge crossing with the Wasserturm and the Rigi/Alps behind.
Chapel Bridge interior: walk the full length and look up at the triangular painted panels (those that survived the fire are 17th century originals; replacements are obvious by their brighter colours).
Lion Monument: arrive before 09:30 to see it without the selfie-stick crowds. It is set in a recess in the cliff face — naturally framed.
Altstadt lanes between Kornmarkt and Weinmarkt: the best preserved medieval burgher-house architecture in central Switzerland. Free to walk.
Verkehrshaus (Swiss Museum of Transport, (GPS [2])47.05098.3326, 3km east by bus): one of the best transport museums in Europe — trains, planes, spacecraft. Allow 3h if visiting. Not on the primary route but worth knowing for rail enthusiasts.
