The Stephansdom (St Stephen's Cathedral) anchors Innere Stadt — the central first district. Work began in 1137; the 137-metre South Tower (completed 1433) and the 230,000-tile Chevron roof are Vienna's skyline. Enter the nave for free — the Gothic proportions are extraordinary. Climb the South Tower's 343 narrow steps for rooftop views across the city toward the Wienerwald hills; alternatively take the lift to the North Tower for the 21-tonne Pummerin bell. The catacombs beneath hold Habsburg internal organs in copper urns (separate ticket, guided only). Stephansplatz around the cathedral is the transit hub — U1/U3 intersection, horse-drawn fiaker carriages (€55/20 min — expensive but iconic), and a tourist café density to avoid.

Practical Tips

South Tower (Steffl) 343 steps: €6, opens 09:00. The climb is narrow and one-way — allow 20 minutes up and 20 down. Views from the viewing platform at 60m.
Mass schedule: Sun 07:00, 08:00, 09:00, 10:00, 12:00, 17:00, 19:00. Tourist access restricted during Mass — check the board at the main entrance.
Cathedral café prices on Stephansplatz: €8–12 for a coffee and cake. Walk 2 minutes off the square for local prices (€3.50–4.50 Melange at any Bäckerei counter).
Haas Haus (Hans Hollein, 1990): the controversial curved glass building directly facing the cathedral from across the square — a deliberate architectural provocation. Good rooftop bar inside (DO & CO, VERIFY hours).
